Workshop Objectives
At
this 2nd Global Research Library 2020 meeting (GRL2020), we are
carrying forward select themes and concepts from the previous instance
of GRL 2020 in Woodinville, Washington (in October
2007). Below, we would like to put forward how we are
converting those concepts into specific more goals and objectives for
our upcoming meeting in Pisa.
Linking Infrastructure—Establish new models for engaging on interoperability at global scale.
Either as individual institutions or a part of consortia, we are all working on improving existing (local) infrastructures and establishing new systems, but moving forward we need to be absolutely certain that these effort are all tightly-linked and easily interoperable (e.g. leveraging community protocols, suites of standards, etc). Infrastructure is used here to include people with appropriate skill sets, systems, standards and protocol suites, and even policy frameworks. What is the appropriate level to engage on this discussion—at the platform level, at the application level, or at the data level? As noted at the previous meeting, this is an undertaking that that must transcend political boundaries and one which demands new cooperative/collaborative frameworks. These solutions might arise from different economic and cultural environments, but we need to focus on solutions that can be sustained for the long term by the global community. It was also observed that it is imperative that these systems are more end-user friendly that they have in the past.
Ensuring sustainability—Elevate the dialog with funding agencies and the private sector about addressing issues at an international level.
It is important to interact closely with the program officers at key funding agencies, foundations, and at relevant private sector organizations and corporations in a concerted effort to establish common goals and work toward eventual sustainability and independence. We recognize that although our problems are global, the vast majority of funding is local—so we must work closely with our colleagues to establish effective international funding partnerships.
Changing people—Encourage initiatives to spur on a new way to prepare professionals for the next generation of research libraries.
A core aspect of re-architecting research libraries will involve advancing professional training in the field. There is no way to renovate global librarianship without simultaneously evolving the education of the current and future librarians. Moving forward, we realize that professionals will need to draw on skills from a variety of fields, including archives, library science, information technology, and computer science. Unfortunately, the field of library and information science education isn’t producing enough viable candidates to meet demand – and hiring from other fields is increasing (i.e., to address the need for scientific data curation). How can we encourage a new mentality and approach in the allied information professions? Ideas mentioned at the past meeting included forums to support best practices, investigating opportunities for international fellowships and exchange; encouraging new, interdisciplinary professional activities; and promotion of cross-sector collaborations to achieve this end.
Building community—Develop effective methods of partnering as a larger community to maintain momentum following this venue.
We must undertake joint outreach and advocacy efforts around explaining our vision for how the global research library should be evolving and how it must continue to scale to support of global information problems. A top recommendation for the previous summit revolved around the idea of producing a high-profile book/publication that highlights the innovative things that enlightened libraries are doing and chart a course that visualizes next steps.
Working Together—Agree upon one or more projects to pursue as a collective.
Ideally, we will be able to identify a project, forum, research programs, or a proof-of-concept idea that we can utilize to launch this effort in a concrete manner.
